Happy Monday! Y’all I have a secret! I get asked how I find confidence at work. Truth be told I am not always confident in what I am doing or thinking, especially at work. I feed off of others emotions or the energy that they bring into the room. I critique myself more than anyone should and worry constantly what people think. For example, if I don’t think people are engaged during a meeting, I feel that that I am doing a bad job or what I am saying is wrong.
These past couple weeks I have been challenged to lead various material at work. To say I was nervous and very unprepared was an understatement. This material was something I had only recently been trained on and now was being asked to lead a team. This meant giving concrete answers on various questions that I wasn’t sure the answer to and various other things. Things that I don’t necessarily know like the back of my hand and I had no one to turn to for guidance.
During this time I was constantly questioning myself and wondering if I was up for the challenge. Questions constantly running through my head of, Can you do this? What will people say if you are wrong? Are you sure this is right? Who are you to give these kinds of answers? Is this the right direction to take the team? All these questions really began to hinder my confidence in my ability to lead.
So how do I combat that crippling feeling? I fake it till I make it. This is something I have lived by for many years and has gotten me through some crazy times. For example, if you don’t know the answer to something give a strong confident “I do not have a concrete answer for this but I will get back to you by the end of the day” answer. There will always be someone with more experience than you in the room but if you are confident in your answers then people don’t tend to question your abilities.
Always try to put your best foot forward in everything that you do and even if you are not 100%, give it a shot. The worst thing is that you fail and if so then you can learn from it. Have the confidence to at least try. People are more lenient to people who are will to try than people who don’t. I am constantly learning in my line of work and I personally learn so much more when I fail at something.
I know this is a little bit more vulnerable of a post but I thought it was important to let y’all in on my little secret about feeling confident at work:) Hope this kicks of your hard working week!
