Happy Monday! I am going off the beaten path today with a blog post about home!! From the first moment I saw my new kitchen, I knew the cabinet color needed to be changed. It was very outdated and wasn’t my taste at all. The past 2 weeks I have been sanding down the cabinets, painting them and then putting on new hardware!
I had shared the process over on my instagram stories but got a bunch of questions about hardware and the overall process. So today I thought I would list out all my tips and tricks on how to paint kitchen cabinets! We had a bit of a mishap with the cabinet doors and had to fix them but overall the process wasn’t too bad.
By the way, I did have help from my wonderful mother who not only provided a ton of great tips but also put in a little time helping me paint! She is the one I got all the tips/steps below from and if I do say so myself the cabinets did not turn out too bad:)
Paint: Sherwin Williams “Agreeable Grey” Latex Satin Finish
Before:
After:
Hardware: Gold Bin Pull Handles // Gold Knobs
- Start by removing all the cabinet doors and drawers.
- TIP: Label drawers and cabinet doors with blue tap so you know where they go when you have to put them back on.
- Lightly sand down all the frames
- TIP: Make sure the surface is well sanded down so there are no bumps
- TIP: Get a warm wet cloth and wipe everything so that the dust and dirt is off the frame
- Apply layers of coat to the frame with a small roller or a very fine paint brush.
- TIP: It took mine 3 coats to completely cover. Make sure you wait till everything is dry before apply another coat.
- TIP: If you find cracks in the frame, try applying more paint over it. If you can’t fill them with paint, then fill it with caulk. The next coat of paint will cover right over it and give it a very clean look.
- Lightly sand down the cabinet doors and drawers. Wipe clean with hot water after. Let them dry.
- Hang the doors back up on the hinges in the Kitchen to paint.
- Paint the front of the cabinet doors, paint the sides and then paint the inside of the door.
- TIP: Make sure there are no drips anywhere. When it dries with drips it looks clumpy.
- It took about 3 coats of paint for my cabinet doors.
- TIP: Try to use a roller brush for most of the doors. It will look more polished and doesn’t leave paint brush strokes.
- Paint the drawer covers and let them dry.
- Finally after everything is dry (I waited a full 24 hours to make sure it was dry). Add the hardware by drilling new holes or using the old ones.
I hope these tips are helpful to getting started on the cabinets! If you have any other tips or general questions feel free to leave them below:)
This turned out so amazing! I’ve never attempted any home renovations as I’ve always lived in apartments, but this came out so well!
