Happy Monday! This blog post has been one that I have been working on for about a month now:) So I am very excited to share the final product! Going into buying a house, I had no furniture at all to my name. Going out and buying brand new furniture wasn’t an option but at the same time I had a vision for how my house was going to look.

Cue estate sales! My mom and I have found some amazing things at estate sales over the past couple months. It takes time and I am very picky about what I end up getting from there. This dresser was one my mom found and forced me to get. Which I will be forever be grateful for! After some love and care it has become a huge statement piece in my bedroom.

Below are all the steps I took to make this dresser really come to live and fit the vision I had for my bedroom!

Dresser

  1. I started off by removing all the drawers, doors and hardware from the dresser.
  2. Since the dresser had not been painted prior, it only needed a very light sand before starting to paint.
  3. Next I took warm water with soap and wiped the whole dresser and drawers down. Let it all dry before moving on to paint.
  4. The paint I used was Lowe’s Valspar Chalk Paint! The swear by this paint because the finish is beautiful. The color I chose was “My Lorgnette”. It’s such a pretty grey and isn’t too dark.
  5. I started by painting the body of the dresser first and getting a first coat on it then I moved on painting the coat on the drawers and doors.
  6. Once I let it dry for a full 24 hours, I sanded the whole dresser again but with sand paper that was very light and barely pressed down. This just removed any imperfections or areas the paint didn’t go on well.
  7. After I sanded the full dresser, I took hot water again and wiped everything down to get the dust off. You really want to avoid getting dust into your paint brush so it’s important to at least wipe the surface down again.
  8. When it is dry, I apply a second coat of the Lowe’s Valspar Chalk Paint. I cover everything like before and let dry.
  9. The finally step is to apply the Lowe’s Valspar Sealing Wax over everything. You don’t want this to go on too thick so start will small amounts and then do multiple layers if needed. I did 2 coats for reference.

Hardware

While the 2nd coat was drying, I started working on the hardware! This was such a fun part for me because I saw this hardware transform right in front of my eyes. “Rub n’ Buff” completely changes the hardware and really brings out a ton of the features. The color I bought was “Antique Gold” but there are other colors you can pick from too! It is an oil based wax so I highly recommend wearing gloves to follow the steps below.

  1. I washed all the hardware with soap and warm water to remove any dirt and grease.
  2. Once they are dry, I put on gloves and put a small amount on my finger and start to rub it all over the hardware one at a time.
  3. To get into all the small cracks, I use a small paint brush to make sure it is fully covered.
  4. After I have rubbed it all over, I check to see if there is anything I missed and then let dry on a paper towel.
  5. Once everything is dry I put it all back together.
