Happy Monday! Lately I have been getting questions about getting prepared for interviews. A lot of y’all are either coming out of college or looking to transition to a new role! I would absolutely love to help y’all out with my best tips and things I follow before my interviews.
From internships, masters interviews, and big girl jobs, I have had many different forms of interviews! All very different but with the help from mentors, I have always felt prepared. Below I have rounded up all the tips I have ever received and list them out for you:)
- Get a full 8 hours of sleep the night before. Leaves you well rested and ready to face the interview!
- Research the company so you know their core values to make sure you align well with their company culture. This will really come across in the interview to the interviewer if you are not a good fit.
- Practice behavioral based interview questions. These questions can sometimes throw you out of line when you can’t think of the right answer.
- Lay out your clothes the day before. The rule of thumb I always go by is “Dress for the job you want, not the job you are applying for.” Always be a little bit more dressed up. I have even asked the person I am communicating with at the company how I should dress. This will give you the expectation that you need to meet.
- Be prepared to talk about your previous work experience or school experience (class projects). Make a list of improvements or significant contributions you have made in school or work to help prepare for experience based questions they will ask.
- Memorize your resume so when they ask questions about certain areas you know exactly what they are talking about. Make sure your resume isn’t too fluffed up because this will come out in the interview when you can’t talk about things.
- Do a mock interview with a friend or even yourself. Find questions online and see if you can answer them without any hesitation.
- Eat a healthy breakfast in the morning to get yourself energized for the day. Sitting in an interview nervous with an empty stomach can be stressful.
- Do NOT drink coffee before an interview. It leaves a bad odor on your breath and if you accidentally spill it will not be easy to hide.
- Plan on arriving 30 minutes early to the interview. It is okay to sit in the parking lot (you can always review your resume at this time). This extra planning will elevate stress incase you hit traffic.
- Lastly, be sure to have at least 10 questions you want to ask the interviewer about their time in the company or the company itself. You do not have to ask all of them but it shows that you are interested in the company when you show initiative.
I hope these tips are super helpful and get you feeling fully prepared to ace your interview! If you have done interviews before what are your tips to preparing? I would love to add more to this list to help other women wanting advice!
